I never expected to fall this hard for a game.
A friend invited me to a mahjong night a few years ago, and I went mostly for the company and the wine. Then someone spread the tiles across the table, the sound of them being washed and stacked, and I was done. Now I play every chance I get. Lunch break games, late night games, games where I absolutely should be working instead.
What hooked me first was how beautiful the tiles are. Each one is a tiny piece of art. The colors, the symbols, the weight of them in your hand. But the deeper I got into the game, the more it started to feel like something else: a connection to my heritage I didn't know I was missing. This game has been played by generations of women gathered around tables, talking and laughing and competing. Sitting at those tables, I feel like part of a lineage.
As a jewelry designer, I couldn't just admire the tiles. I had to make something. The Bird Bam, with its magnificent bird, felt like the obvious place to start. A symbol of luck and new beginnings, rendered in gold and gemstones. Then the 7 Dot, all graphic punch and color. Each piece is handmade in our Los Angeles studio, the way all my work is.
I made these for the women at my mahjong table, and for everyone who loves this game the way I do. Mahjong found me later in life, and I'm so glad it did.
